British Pakistani visual artists: portfolios to study first

“British Pakistani art” is not a style. Oil painting, contemporary miniature, watercolour, textile construction, installation, and abstraction do different work. Begin with portfolios and materials, not a heritage colour palette. Look before asking the work to represent an entire diaspora.

Note scale and surface before reading statements. A Lahore miniature education, Wales childhood, North of England studio, and London textile practice are different formations. Owning a print is not owning copyright; visiting an exhibition is not a licence to crop a painting into a wedding moodboard.

Six practices

Hubbah Choudhry — oil painting around culture, memory, and inherited history. Ask about support, varnish, framing, and care.

Hira Butt — exhibitions, events, residencies mapped as working conditions, not badges.

Saima Rasheed — Lahore miniature training meeting migration and agency questions in northern England. Do not reduce miniature to “small detailed painting.”

Sufian Ahmed — watercolour and ink linking urban looking with miniature-derived marks. Confirm original versus print.

Homeland by Sheeba — textile wall pieces where weight, light, and mounting matter as much as colour.

Shoa Malik — abstraction across canvas and drip; confirm original, edition, or platform reproduction.
