Desi skincare routines: what helps and what can harm
Skin

“Desi skin” is not a diagnosis. South Asian people can have dry, oily, acne-prone, sensitive or combination skin, and brown skin can show irritation as darkening rather than obvious redness. Begin with what your skin does, not a kitchen remedy inherited through a group chat.

A routine with three jobs

  1. Cleanse without leaving skin tight or burning.
  2. Moisturise according to dryness and texture preference.
  3. Protect exposed skin with broad-spectrum sunscreen and other sun protection.

Hyperpigmentation often improves only after the trigger—acne, eczema, friction or product irritation—is controlled. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends gentle care and sun protection for dark spots in darker skin tones. Adding several acids while the skin still stings can create more inflammation and more pigment.

Introduce one variable

Patch test a new product as directed and add it away from an important event. Keep the cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen stable while evaluating one treatment. Record amount, frequency and reaction; a shelf of simultaneous products makes the cause of burning or bumps impossible to identify.

Claim or symptomSafer response
“Instant fairness”Reject colourism and inspect ingredients and seller
Burning or swellingWash off, stop and seek care if severe or persistent
Persistent acne or pigmentQualified assessment rather than repeated scrubs
Changing mole or non-healing lesionPrompt medical review, not cosmetic treatment

Lightening products require particular caution

The FDA warns against illegal over-the-counter lightening products containing mercury or hydroquinone in the United States and reports potentially serious harm. Regulations differ by country; an unlabelled imported jar is not safer because relatives recognise its name.

Seek professional help for scarring, sudden change, severe reactions or a condition affecting daily life. A good routine is boring enough to repeat, gentle enough to tolerate and free from the idea that healthy skin must become lighter.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, medication and planned procedures can change which active ingredients are appropriate; ask a qualified clinician. Give a tolerated routine a sensible observation period. Photographs in consistent light are more useful than examining pigment after every wash.
